Transform Your Garage into a Home Gym

home-gym

Are you thinking about turning your garage into a home gym? Congratulations on your choice to get healthy!

Converting your garage is going to take some work on your part, however once everything is done you’ll probably wonder why you wasted so much time and gas money going back and forth to the local gym.

In fact, many people who decide on a garage home gym end up working out much more than they originally thought. This makes the investment totally worth it.

Clear Out the Garage

Obviously, the first thing you need to do is determine how much space you need and clean out the garage. Throw away things that you haven’t used in years. Chances are you’ll never use them again, anyway. Consider having a yard sale. Not only does this free up space, you can earn some money in the process.

In the event you have a lot of things you want to keep, renting a storage unit near your home is a great option.

Once the garage is clean, it’s time to make any necessary repairs. This includes things like:

  • Repairing cracks in the floor or laying a new floor
  • Putting up insulation and hanging sheetrock
  • Putting in additional electrical outlets
  • Adding additional lighting fixtures

Essential Gym Equipment

The equipment you purchase is really a personal preference. Some avid home gym enthusiasts suggest that you purchase the majority of your equipment first. This way, it gives you more of an incentive to get started. Equipment to consider:

  • Free weights
  • Bench press
  • Treadmill
  • Balance equipment
  • Heart rate monitor
  • Medicine ball
  • Elliptical
  • Stair climber

Keep in mind that whatever equipment you buy, needs to fit in the space designated for your gym. Leave enough space in between large pieces of equipment, for maintenance purposes.

Storage Solutions

There are many ways to effectively store things in your garage, whether they’re workout‑related or garage‑related. Consider the purchase of numerous clear plastic storage bins, in a variety of sizes. Attach an inventory sheet on each one. Stack these along one wall, for easy access. With a little extra effort, you can also hang storage containers from the ceiling.

Storage shelves and cabinets are two more options, cabinets being the most expensive. Look for used items at garage sales, or online sites such as Craigslist.org. With a little paint and elbow grease, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Creative Garage Gym Ideas

Get as creative as you like, with your garage home gym. Think about things like a climbing wall and mirrors that make it easy to keep track of your form and progress.

If parking in front of your home is allowed, consider replacing the garage door with large windows. This way you can enjoy Mother Nature, while getting a workout.

The Comfortable Garage Gym

Of course, you should be comfortable in your gym. The comfort level you want to achieve probably depends on the amount of time you’ll be spending in your new gym.

Some things to consider adding are:

  • A small refrigerator for water
  • A portable heater or air conditioner (depending on the season)
  • A television
  • A sound system

Now, you know more about converting your garage into a gym. It’s recommended that you completely plan everything out, before making any purchases. Also, you need to make sure you’re committed to exercising on a regular basis. If not, you might not be investing wisely.
