Simple Ways to Keep the Garage Cooler in the Hot Weather

Dehumidifier

Most people do not spend enough time thinking about the garage and ways that they could make it better, more useful, and more comfortable. If you are going to want to utilize the garage for more than just storing your vehicle – or even if it is for your vehicle – you will want to consider some of the ways that you might be able to improve upon it. Of course, the same is true when you decide that you want to turn it into an office, a hobby room, a playroom for the kids, a place to hang out with friends, or anything else.

In the warmer months of the year, and in areas where it tends to be hot most of the year, the garage can quickly become unbearable. What you thought was going to be your little getaway could be home to trapped heat and humidity instead. This can lead to many problems, including rust, mold, and more; not to mention discomfort. Fortunately, there are some things that you can do.

An Insulated and Weathertight Door

One of the first things that you want to do is make sure that you have a door that has quality insulation, as this is going to make it far more energy efficient. When the time comes to get a new garage door, you will want to make sure you choose one that has polyurethane foam insulation. Check to make sure that there are no thermal bridges, which could cause heat to come into your garage, as well. Thermal bridges would also allow for the transfer of cold air during the winter. When you choose a superior quality garage door, it really can make a difference, even when you do not have air conditioning in the garage.

Consider a Dehumidifier

If you happen to live in an area where the humidity gets high, you are going to want to add a dehumidifier to the garage. The level of humidity should not be any higher than 45% to 50% if you want to be comfortable. Make sure that you have a quality dehumidifier that can help to lower the humidity in the garage.

AC and Ventilation

If you are using the garage regularly and you spend quite a bit of time in there, you want it to be as comfortable as possible, naturally. You might want to consider adding a vent from your central AC if you have it, as this can help to make the garage a much more comfortable place to be. Having fans and other methods of ventilation in the garage can help, as well.
